Many tool and knife sharpeners consider the Belgian stones as the quintessential finishing stones. Geologically speaking they are breccias, 500 million-year-old sedimentary stones composed of very uniform, angular garnet abrasive particles. Because Belgian stones have been highly sought after for hundreds of years, the quarries are almost completely exhausted. The remaining stones are cut from thin strata of rock, but are still of the same high quality. The stones come glued to a slate base for added support. Used with water.
