Japanese Multi-Layered Steel (Takefu Suminagashi)

One of the leading manufacturers of specialty steels in Japan, Takefu, has developed a technique for making fine quality Suminagashi steels by machine. The final product is a lamination of 22 layers of steel with a central layer of "White Steel." The layers are carefully forge-welded together using a reversing mill and a protective gas. The steel blanks can be ground or forged and then hardened to produce blades of both incredible sharpness and edge life. This steel has already become very sought after by knifemakers in Japan. This it the first time it will be available to Western blacksmiths. Supplied in unhardened strips with instructions for hardening.
