Solid Ink Cakes
Chinese solid ink is made from the pure soot produced by burning high-resincontent wood or vegetable oil in a controlled manner. The soot is boiled with linseed oil and animal glue, kneaded until a dough-like consistency is obtained, then cut and pressed into molds and finally left to air dry. To use, the ink must be rubbed with water on an ink stone until a liquid of the desired concentration is produced.
