Oil extracted from the seeds of the white poppy flower (papaver somniferum) has been used since time immemorial to make high quality varnishes and oil paints. The main advantage of poppyseed oil over lindseed oil is that it does not tend to turn yellowish with age. The high transparency of poppyseed oil makes it the perfect base for violin varnishes and clear protective wood finishes. It provides excellent protection against moisture and dirt and penetrates deeply into the wood. Poppyseed oil dries very slowly (up to 2 weeks per coat). Multiple coats of poppyseed oil (with light sanding inbetween) yield a warm, silky gloss and a surface which is pleasant to the touch. Poppyseed oil is food-safe and can be mixed with other vegetable oils and solvents (e.g. turpentine). We recommend using it for art objects, turnery, toys, kitchen furniture, kitchen utensils, tool and knife handles. It can also be mixed with pigments to make oil paints.
